Formed in 1895 by
Louis Aldrich, the Actors' Society of America endeavored to standardize contracts between actors and producers. Due to the virtual monopoly of the
Theatrical Syndicate, little progress was made. When Aldrich died in 1901, the ASA's membership declined. The organization finally disbanded in 1912 to be replaced by Actors' Equity Association.
